Warming up for the Games - Where will you be?
Come and break a sweat for Victoria!! Sunday 20 November 2005 is a day to swim, walk, cycle or even dance. Be part of an active countdown to the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Every municipality in the State will host events including fun runs, free leisure centre open days, demonstrations of Tai Chi, all in a celebration for the Games.

This single day of unified action is designed to bring people together and encourage them to take up a sport or leisure activity on a more regular basis.

Tasters to whet your appetite:

  • The City of Yarra will host a Community walk/fun run, finishing at Dight Falls in a community celebration that involves traditional Aboriginal festivities including food preparation and face painting.

  • The Shire of Glenelg will connect townships through its "Communal Fun Run or Walk to Malawi". It is hoped that the total distance journeyed by all participants will equal 10,507 kilometres - the distance from the Glenelg Shire to their Adopt a Second Team - Malawi.

  • Wodonga will teach their community the Congo, Jamaican style at Sumsion Gardens. Celebrations will centre around the rhythm of the drum and Wodonga's Adopt a Second Team - Jamaica.

  • Bass Coast and South Gippsland (in partnership) will invite everybody to "Warming Up for the Games" from Coast to Hills- a race or meander along part or all of the Great Southern Trail from Nyora to Leongatha and beyond to Welshpool. The activity stations along the way will have something to keep everybody steaming along.

  • Strathbogie invites the community to visit Violet Town recreation reserve and join local legends in taking part in everything from lawn bowls to little aths, golf to skateboarding - there will be something for everyone.

  • These are just some of the fantastic events that will happening on the 20th of November. To find out what is going on and to get involved, either you or your school, please contact your local council.
