Is there a budding Ian Thorpe in your classroom? Does one of your students look set to become the next Tamsyn Lewis? If so, the Future Athletes Program might be for them.
The Future Athletes Program is part of the Victorian Government's efforts to make the most of the 2006 Commonwealth Games. It offers specialised clinics to challenge and inspire young people to take their sporting potential to the next level.
WHAT DO THESE CLINICS OFFER?
Specifically, the clinics are designed to:
Link talented student-athletes with developmental pathways run by State Sporting Associations
Provide valuable technical advice from Victoria's top coaches and athletes
Give advice on good nutrition, injury prevention, and ethics in sport
Promote a balanced approach to personal development as well as sporting achievement.
The clinics are delivered by the Victorian Institute of Sport and sixteen State Sporting Associations. Each clinic is limited to 40 students is are free of charge.
Many students are already involved in a sports performance program through their membership in Sports Club, so this project aims to attract those who have not yet made a substantial commitment to a particular sport, or want to explore their potential. It is these students who will find the Future Athletes Program helpful in progressing to the next level of sporting excellence.
WHAT SPORTS ARE INVOLVED?
The program focuses on the 16 sports in the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE PROGRAM?
Broadly speaking, the program is open to Victorian secondary school students competing in representative school events. Detailed selection criteria are specific to each sport. Application forms can be found on the Victorian Institute of Sport website or at each sporting association's web site.
